Obituary for LAVETA SCOFIELD

LaVeta Iva (Medlock) Scofield, 90, of Vandalia, Michigan died following an illness on Saturday, December 22.

Mrs. Scofield was born March 11, 1928 in Larkinburg, Kansas to the late Clarence and Velma Medlock. And married to John Scofield on January 14, 1950. John preceded LaVeta in death in 2003.

LaVeta started working and learning about business as a teenager in the family- owned Medlocks restaurant in Plymouth. LaVeta graduated from the Institute of Design, Chicago; majoring in Visual Design. She started her graphic artist career at the Memorial Album Company in Plymouth utilizing her artistic and calligraphy skills preparing memorial albums, and then at Smith’s Nu Art Photo Shop in South Bend; finishing photographs. LaVeta went on to Miles Laboratories/Bayer in 1952 and continued for 41 years, creating “Speedy” Alka-Seltzer merchandise, developing graphic presentations for executives, and designing product packaging. Over her career, she honed her unique ability to mesh intuition, business knowledge and graphic design. She was a woman ahead of her time.

LaVeta also was an accomplished artist specializing in still life, portraits and landscapes – sharing her creations with family and friends. LaVeta continued to refine her artistic skills by taking classes well into her 70s.

She spent 45 years as a summer resident and 10 years as a full-time resident at Birch Lake in Vandalia, Michigan.

Mrs. Scofield is survived by a sister, Jean Murphy of Plymouth; son Jon (Karen) of Grand Rapids, MI; two daughters, Nina (Steve) Myers of Venice, FL, and Dawn (Michael) Adamson of Atlanta, GA; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
